Every Christmas, apparently. Miss Hickory is a story that centers on nature. You turn a page and see a sketch of a fawn, so you know this will be the chapter about the fawn.

Even the most bizarre and potentially inappropriate of old books can hold interest for some.
This blog is intended to provide information for parents (especially parents of preschoolers) on media for children. George Wolbers Change ). He is an overbearing, semi-abusive pheasant husband to Hen.
Much of the book’s most ardent theme can be lost If readers are not focused on a single point that Miss Hickory was one of, if not the first feminist characters in children’s book history. But yes, children’s books do age quickly sometimes. Hickory”. Everything Ruth Gannett encompassed with the center fold illustration in ‘Now Christmas Comes’ – the Peaceable Kingdom setting, the white crow leading the procession, the combined starry sky and full moonlit night- all served an indelible role in bringing the miracle of the season to us. The quirky stories mostly involve Miss Hickory, but not always.

There are times when I’m a bit grumpy with myself for committing to this Newbery Challenge.
Miss Hickory would wake up and find Squirrel IN BED WITH HER, under the covers in the benign hope that ‘he’ was keeping her warm?? Miss Hickory by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey. The best advice I can give would be to consider your own young reader and how they will react. My daughters were equally unbothered by Miss Hickory's "death" near the end of the book, which is clearly more of a transition than a true loss of life, since Miss Hickory is always understood to be a toy, not a human being. Even without the horrifying ending, it’s a super weird story. All writings posted here are © Kim Thompson, unless otherwise indicated.
I just felt that this elderly white man couldn’t understand why his pre-teen daughters (who, by the way, weren’t white) wouldn’t be into books that completely left them out and had odd lessons for the 21st century. I find Miss Hickory parallels the Grimm Brothers in that both books are dark, peculiar, short, and easily digestible. But so are the fables of the Brother Grimm. Then there’s the ending… When the lazy, thoughtless Squirrel finally gives in to his baser instincts and pulls her head off to eat it, Miss Hickory goes on living without it. Squirrel gets so hungry toward the end of winter that he can't resist eating Miss Hickory's head, whereupon her thoughts dissolve as she is digested, in a scene worthier of Anna Karenina dying on the tracks, or perhaps Hermann Broch's Death of Virgil, than a light-hearted children's fantasy. I admire your steadfast progress on this reading challenge. But it's hard to imagine anyone picking up the book today and reacting with anything more than tolerance for its quaintness. Thanks again for your thoughtful remarks, I enjoyed reading them. Change ), You are commenting using your Twitter account.
My mom asked her about it, and the first thing my 11-year-old niece said is, “Her parents are dead.” She’s such a dark weirdo, and I love her. I do hope you will devour Miss Hickory again both as an adult an passionate ambassador of children’s literature. Why or why not? everything you need to sharpen your knowledge of Miss Hickory.
First and foremost, reviewers describing Miss Hickory as a doll have done readers a disservice; nowhere in the book, it’s jacket or introduction is she referred to as anything but a country woman.

They’ll find the episodic nature of the stories engaging. Change ), You are commenting using your Google account. The 1947 Newbery Medal winner, Miss Hickory by Carolyn Sherwin Bailey, is one of the weaker Medal books. Miss Hickory, a doll fashioned from a twig, is in some ways admirable, but she lacks charm, gentleness, physical attractiveness, and the sorts of qualities that make characters immediately likable.
But that’s basically resolved in a chapter or two, and then you still have 100 pages to read.
Which is good! In fact, Miss Hickory comes across as the stereotypical meddling old lady who self-righteously judges others no matter whether they help or harm her. WHY, Lord, WHY? She’s hard-headed (naturally), persnickety, a total know-it-all, and a scold. My niece has been reading a revised, more child-friendly (sentence-wise) version of The Secret Garden, and she loves it so far.

And it's no more torpid in plot than many a latter-day Medalist. Make your reader think about the ghosts of dead mamas. A hard-headed doll lives on her own in a little house in the woods near a human home, the one she originally came from. Oddly, it's dated despite not being topical. The reader observes the interactions between the animals and sees how each creature prepares itself to survive the winter. As children, we were further drawn into the adventure by Bailey’s treatment of Christianity on another plane- the world non-human. It’s possible though, that children will accept the whole thing without qualms.
Preview of Miss Hickory Summary: Miss Hickory is a story that centers on nature. A summing up… don’t be lulled into thinking this is a book without bite, simply because it’s about a doll. Miss Hickory's decapitated twig-body then staggers around for a while, eventually climbing an …
Plus, the illustrations by Ruth Gannett really bring the characters to life. With this perspective in mind I discovered a delightful, if slightly disjointed, collection of vignettes that explores a year in the life of a doll. But beyond that, I think this book might not sit well with readers today. Before the final weirdness, there are three other big weirdnesses. The story concerns Miss Hickory, a doll made from an apple wood twig, with a hickory nut for a head, and what happens when her human family goes away for the winter and leaves her behind--outside, no less. With some aid and advice from a Crow and a cat named Mr. T. Willard-Brown, Miss Hickory does quite well, though her suspicious, unfriendly nature proves slow to thaw. Continuing The Great Newbery Quest I picked up the 1947 winner Miss Hickory. Is this book weird?Yes.
It also allows younger children to focus on one story, one set of characters, and one moral. Classic Remarks: In What Order Should You Read the Narnia Books?
I mean, they might interpret this to mean don’t be an asshole unless you want to be forcibly ripped apart and devoured by an animal.
I’m not sure I would have liked this one much when I was young either!
The characters are for the most part animals, and the changing seasons play an important role.
It makes me wonder what the author’s own experiences were as a little girl. She is well aware of her stubborn nature and is constantly trying to change. I can see why this would be appealing, especially the beautiful illustrations. I like old children’s books and I give my grandchildren as many classics as I can.
One of my favorite books as a child! Instead she shows the harshness of winter and the unpleasantness of selfish behavior.
Miss Hickory is deemed alive by the family who made her and the forest animals who befriend her. Oh yeah, and also all the dead animals show up, so there’s Doe hanging out with Fawn.
It’s a children’s book for sure, but so much more than meets the eye, if you understand that “anything can happen”.
