‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 2, Episode 11 Recap: We’re Still Here, Yvonne Strahovski and Joseph Fiennes in “The Handmaid’s Tale.”, Oprah Winfrey introduce a song by Bruce Springsteen. You thought last week was hard? June cannot have Nick and Luke and Hannah and Holly and freedom all at once.

I was certainly wrong last time, but my current guess is that he saw Waterford sneak Nick and Offred into the car and sent his guardian pals after them. It’s a powerful image, June sitting silently as she absorbs lyrics like “We fell in love I knew it had to end/We took what we had and we ripped it apart,” but there’s one thing no discerning viewer should be able to shake: The person voicing the radio newscaster. Serena and Fred abruptly leave, since they shouldn’t be there either, and June sets the gun down. Season 2 ends the same way, but June is on the outside of the van this time.

In terms of plot, that’s about it, aside from the brief flashbacks, most of which show June surrounded by Luke, Moira and Grandma Holly during the final months of her first pregnancy. This would be an *ideal* time for Nick to pull back up and rescue her, even if Waterford probably has every last Guardian on the hunt for them. Warning: Spoilers for The Handmaid's Tale follow. A slow-burning episode finds June forced to make some crucial decisions. Then she goes into labor. Perhaps she will be forced to give birth on her own in the desolate house? She repeats “no” to herself, her face overcome with anxiety.

Stranger things have happened on this show, and clearly too much gore could’ve spoiled the poignancy of the scene, but it’s not like “The Handmaid’s Tale” to make anything look easy. Snippets of her previous pregnancy continuously creep in. It’s none other than Serena and Fred, in as deep of a panic as we’ve ever seen them.

The scenes that follow are just as stunning. Where did Nick go in The Handmaid's Tale? The Handmaid’s Tale season 2 spoilers: Fans in meltdown. I just hope Serena Joy is so overwhelmed to get her now-born baby, Nick and Offred escape any sort of punishment. She even gets to the point where she has a clear shot at both of them. The Handmaid's Tale season 2: Who is Oprah Winfrey's character? The shot is juxtaposed with another flashback, this one of June getting dressed for a party with Luke, while pregnant with Hannah. So she returns to the mansion, takes stock of the canned food and other supplies inside and locates car keys. The sequence then moves into her life in Gilead, particularly those birthing “lessons” with Aunt Lydia — the refrain of “breathe, breathe, breathe; push, push, push.” She remembers when Janine had her baby. Fred will be mad that his status symbol is gone. Are they all supposed to live happily ever after in polyamory?

It is difficult to believe that June would let Holly go so easily. No, seriously: WTF, June?

The Waterfords leave.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 2 airs on Hulu on Wednesdays and Channel 4 on Sundays. And later, June in the present getting closer to giving birth is placed against images of her first childbirth experience — with Luke and Moira surrounding her in the hospital, playing music, encouraging. As this is all going on, meanwhile, June is upstairs preparing for something drastic: She’s found a shotgun in a chest.

But Emily has enough to deal with. It’s also possible now that the guardians’ appearance last week was spontaneous. was within her grasp, but June put Holly in the van instead. It’s a smarter choice than a starry cameo ordinarily lets on— Oprah’s recognizable voice offers an extra bit of optimism to the scene, a calming effect reflective of her place in popular culture. Offred is a Handmaid, one of the few fertile women in the oppressive Republic of Gilead.

June sets herself up as nicely as she can: Back in the house, pitch-dark outside, with a fire going and a blanket spread across the floor.

My best guess is it's Nick pulling up at the very end of the episode after Offred gives birth. Serena Joy will be mad that she gave up “her” baby, who will now have nobody to look after her. June’s decision to pass the baby to Emily feels like a betrayal.

She reaches the bedroom, where June took the jacket, and then, in the mirror where June was inspecting herself, sees a handmaid robe in the bathroom. Nick could be mad that June abandoned their child, and Rita should be mad that the Marthas went to so much effort on June’s behalf, only for her to turn around and stay. Offred returns to the car but can’t open (or bust through) the garage door. First, it’s June with her mother Holly (Cherry Jones), who’s trying to get her daughter to have the baby in an alternative setting, out of a hospital.

It was a moment of everything that can go wrong did go wrong.

“Holly” isn’t a denouement, exactly, but it wraps up one of the season’s crucial arcs in quiet, tense fashion. Would she have shot them, her serial rapist and his accomplice, if they had discovered her? Third time, she just keeps her foot on the gas pedal — the roar of the engine turning overwhelming, but also still futile. She creaks it open, and loads it, vying with all her might to keep quiet — and she does. It’s raw and full of rage, yet another indication of Yvonne Strahovski’s prowess in this role. (Recap continues on Page 2). No luck. Nick has black hair, brown eyes and olive skin. She names her Holly — after her mother, the woman who has loomed heavily for June through both of her rebellions. And then the baby is born.

But then those Guardians he followed out didn't make it so easy.

An alarming amount of blood loss left viewers questioning if the baby survived, but after hours of screaming in pain, interspersed with flashbacks from her first birth, she finally manages to successfully birth her baby herself. The fight only gets uglier and crueler, until Serena finally breaks down — the feelings that have been festering coming out in one pained monologue. After a season of fighting to remain with her baby, June sends her off to the unknown. “Stars and stripes forever, baby.”) Back in the mansion, Offred is gathering supplies when the Commander and Serena — who is furious at her husband — barge in looking for her. The only character who can be seen in the short Season 4 trailer is June, so Nick's future with the show remains uncertain.

“Holly” is easily among the show’s best hours to date. However, this time couldn’t have been more different but viewers were relieved to see the birth go as smoothly as it could go. I think we can safely say that many Handmaid’s Tale viewers feared Eden’s involvement in Nick’s life was going to end in someone’s death.
